  Proofreading Project of William Bruce

An Open Book

Welcome to the website for the Web Proofreading Project, an unabashedly personal project of William Bruce for the amelioration of typographical, formatting, and stylistic errors in Internet publications. The primary purpose of this page is to present the needed information for prospective beneficiaries of this project, hopefully encouraging them to take advantage of the services provided. Since the Web Proofreading Project is driven by the personal proclivities and enthusiasms of its founder (your humble writer), this would entail obtaining my potentially free services as a proofreader -- and why wouldn't you want free proofreading?

To attract attention to the matter, I will state again that I am willing to proofread online material without monetary recompense.

My general assumption is that there are many writers, editors, and publishers who would be enthusiastic to have someone proofread their material for either pleasure or minor compensation. I hope to appeal to both groups, with both opportunities available. If I find suggested or submitted works to be suitably interesting or edifying, I will proofread the material without any cost to the editor, author, publisher, or whomever. Otherwise, I must expect a small fee.

  Incentives, Self-Interest, and My Résumé

My purposes for engaging in this project should be obvious: indulging my proclivities for perfectionism, bolstering my résumé, and just generally stroking/massaging my ego -- all while gaining extensive experience proofreading. I am not ashamed to say that my ultimate intentions for the project entail paid work, and I am at this time willing to accept payment for my work. However, I doubt that at the moment anyone would be inclined to pay, unless others could not be persuaded to engage in proofreading their material. I am aware of such a possibility, and have already written my requested fees for those circumstances.

I discuss other reasons for proofreading in greater detail on my personal page.
